How to Properly Lubricate Your Garage Door for Smooth Operation

1.Buy a bottle of lithium grease or garage door lubricant. Do not use general lubricants such as WD-40. Lithium grease is required for garage door lubrication. You can usually find it at hardware stores or online. Of course, there are also lubricants specifically designed to lubricate garage doors. Do not use motor oil. Compared with garage door lubricants, motor oil is more likely to attract dust and drip. 

2.Open the sectional garage door and spray the lubricant on each hinge. Gently lift the garage door with your hands and spray the lubricant on the hinges that are in contact with the rails. This will lubricate the moving parts of the door and make it open & close more smoothly. Spray each hinge 1-2 times to get the lubricant on all sides.

3.Lubricate the rollers. The rollers are the moving parts of the garage door that are fixed to the hinges. These rollers contain small ball bearings, and they must be fully lubricated to open and close the door smoothly. Plug a thin tube into the spray can and spray the lubricant into the rollers. Wipe off any lubricant that comes out, or the door will become unstable. Spray lubricant on every visible ball bearing, but note that you don't need to spray lubricant on the nylon rollers.

4.Spray lubricant on the springs and bearing plates as well. The springs are usually located at the top of the garage door and need to be fully lubricated as well. The bearing plates are the round parts that move on either side of the springs. Spray lubricant on the springs and then on the center of the bearing plates. Then try to open and close the door to spread the lubricant evenly. If the spring is broken or bent, it's best to replace it with a new one before lubricating.

Using the right lubricant and regularly lubricating your garage door helps keep it in top condition.
