Troubleshooting the most common garage door problems

Typically used every day, garage doors can be overworked and the openers do break down and stop operating properly.

If this does happen, do not assume anything needs to be replaced as it may simply require a few repairs which don’t involve a lot of money or use of specialist tools.
Solutions 1
The opener does not operate with either the remote or wall switch, in which there are several possible solutions.
It may be common sense but make sure you are standing close enough to the door for the remote to work; you’d be surprised how many people fail to do this properly and think the issue is more difficult than it is! If the door functions fine with the wall switch, replace the battery or reprogram the remote.
Solutions 2
Examine the door for any damage such as scrapes and bumps from cars, as something as little as a dent can stop the door from working properly.
Be sure to check the header and door brackets to see if they’ve become loose over time as tightening the brackets will solve any alignment issue; it is a good idea to monitor this regularly even if the door is working.  You may also need to inspect the connector between the pulley and the motor as if you notice too much slack, this may need to be adjusted. However, be careful not to over-tighten as this can also lead to problems.
Solutions 3
If your garage door falls when it is released, the extension springs are probably worn and should be replaced.
If the garage door opens on its own, the extension springs are probably too strong and should be replaced with lighter ones. It is worth checking the metal rollers and hinges if your garage door sticks when opening or closing, as they may need lubricating or the tracks may be dirty, blocked or out of alignment.
